Sparkling it shines below me,

Windows beckon, doorways shout
Here’s fame and fortune crying out.

The blocks rise up like heads of serpents:
Hobos, bankers, diamond merchants.
New York spreads out its wings for me,
Cars roaring in a metal sea.

Where the home is, where the heart is
Life and love and endless parties.
Where all are salesmen and all bet
That you can buy with no regret
A car, a friend, a bowl of gold,
A single candle in a darkened world.
