The Gurus right, you want low gears when your draggin' a worm, Cause' it just dont matter, Throw it out, let it sink, and then just bump it off the bottom in a twitching sort of motion, using your rod tip, not the reel. Keep ' Bumping ' it in till your worm reaches shore, and watch for followers as they will sometimes come right to the shore and hit. So as you can see your reel gears have no influence here, as the work is done with your rod tip.
Certain crankbaits and swimmers can require a desired cranking speed in order to achieve certain depths or speeds, but when cranking a worm, any worm, throw it out, let it it sink, and bump it to shore, using your rod as opposed to your reel.
PS. Keep a loose drag until your hook is set !!
