Rig for fishing black drum?
Hey all, I'm a lot more used to catching bass and trout, and frankly uses 30 dollar rod and reel combos from wallmart, but I'm looking to go catch some 30lb blackdrums and I was wondering what sort of rod/reel I should go with. The area I'm going to fish doesn't have a huge amount of room for finesse, so it's going to be more a tug of war battle, so I'd rather err on too much strength rather then lose the fish. Thanks
good answers so far, thanks guys.. and for clarification it's actually creek fishing around an old bridge, heard its a good spot but theres a lot to get tangled on, hence the brute force approach
So, what you need is an inexpensive rod and reel that is "easily cast-able" that you can quickly subdue a big Drum before he gets wrapped around some bridge pilings??
You need something with a heavy drag and a quick gear ratio.
Here's my picks-
1. Abu Garcia 6600 C4- It has a blinding 6:3:1 gear ratio, is inexpensive, easy to cast and a heavy enough drag to do the job. Offshore fishermen will occasionally use these as a "light tackle" option- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_74091____SearchResults?ordProd=Y&CMID=BOTTOM_selectitems#itemDetail
2. Abu Garcia 7000C3i- This is IT! Combine this with an Ugly Stik Series rod and this would be exactly what you would need. Hands down my favorite reel for fish over 30LB's- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_89108____SearchResults
3. Ugly Stik Series Rod- You won't be able to find a more durable, inexpensive, rod than an Ugly Stik. They were virtually designed to do exactly what you want to do- haul in monster's quickly! - http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_71841____SearchResults
If your searching for a "big fish ONLY" outfit get the Abu Garcia 7000. If your looking for something that will be more "sporting" and be able to catch smaller-sized fish AS WELL AS bigger fish get the Abu Garcia C-4.
Both Ugly Stik & Abu Garcia have good warranties and if you purchase from Bass Pro or Cabelas you will get their warranties as well.
To be honest, this outfit is the least expensive combo you could get that will def do the job. You can TRY a cheaper Spinning outfit or conventional reel but after about four 30LB Drum the drag system on cheaper reels tend to "turn into butter"...........
If I were you I'd stay away from "Walmart combo's" if you plan on going up against big Drum. Better to purchase 1 decent outfit than 2-3 "questionable" outfit's.....
Spool up with some green Power Pro 10/40 braid with a 2 FT 25-30LB Flurocarbon leader and you would be set. Power Pro?-

A good 1/0-2/0 circle hook would also be advised- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_101148____SearchResults
Hope this helped ya? Good luck.
UPDATE: KOF has a point- if you know for SURE those Drum your catching are 30LB's PLUS you may need to move up to a 6/0-10/0 hook, however, Drum (Reds, Blacks) generally have much smaller mouths than Stripers. (Don't you think KOF?)
I've caught huge Redfish and Drum in Fla on 1/0-3/0 Hooks, (upwards of 25-30LB's). Heavy-wire Circles are much stronger and wider gapped than lite-wire.....the size bait you will be using will also affect what size hook to use....
But, you may want to use a heavier leader, as KOF suggests. The problem? You won't get as many hook up's because of the heavier leader- even 80LB fluro isn't as "invisible" as 30LB.
You'd be surprised how strong and abrasion resistance the newer Fluro lines are. And the Power Pro 10/40 Braid is mighty abrasion resistant......
Heck, if you want, you could use a heavy wire leader, 100lb line, a Penn International and a heavy-wire, non-circle, 10/0 hook! (lol)
But whats the "Sport" in that?......(lol) I guess it depends on what you consider "fishing"....
Thumbs up to KOF.
(Here's a pic of a guy with a 28.5LB Black he caught on a fly..... http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dbig%2Bblack%2Bdrum%26fr%3Dyfp-t-501%26toggle%3D1%26cop%3Dmss%26ei%3DUTF-8%26rand%3D1240879006861&w=150&h=105&imgurl=flyfishlouisiana.com%2Fimages%2Fjim_28_drum_small.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fflyfishlouisiana.com%2Fjim_29.5_red.htm&size=3.9kB&name=jim_28_drum_smal...&p=big+black+drum&oid=36d3e5fa51cda578&no=15&tt=744&sigr=11cvrrd4q&sigi=11hdlk2k4&sigb=13nre1pd2 Heck, this guy says Seatrout gear for inshore Blacks!- Talk about "light tackle"- http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dbig%2Bblack%2Bdrum%26fr%3Dyfp-t-501%26toggle%3D1%26cop%3Dmss%26ei%3DUTF-8%26rand%3D1240879006861&w=150&h=105&imgurl=flyfishlouisiana.com%2Fimages%2Fjim_28_drum_small.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fflyfishlouisiana.com%2Fjim_29.5_red.htm&size=3.9kB&name=jim_28_drum_smal...&p=big+black+drum&oid=36d3e5fa51cda578&no=15&tt=744&sigr=11cvrrd4q&sigi=11hdlk2k4&sigb=13nre1pd2#FCar=137e530c6d3d2090 )
