Which rod is better?
Which rod is better a St. Croix Legend Elite or Avid Series or G Loomis IMX?
Ok, a better comarison would be as follows:
St. Croix Legend Elite vs. Loomis GLX - these are the rodmakers flagship models - both are very light and both have extreme fast actions (too fast IMO). Both are made from generation 5 graphite. The Loomis rod is a little pricier but has nicer hardware (reelseat, etc) Expect to pay about
$500 for the St. Croix and $625 for the Loomis
St. Croix Legend Ultra vs. Loomis IMX (Metolius) -
These are made from generation 4 graphite. The difference is that Loomis offers you a choice of tapers in either pesentation (medium fast) or high line speed (very fast).
The Legend Ultra is a fast action rod < I own one>
Again, the Loomis has nicer fittings.
the St. Croix runs about $300-$350, the Loomis $350-$380
The Avid series would be compared to the Loomis GL3
Both are medium fast action rods. The St. Croix is made
from generation 2 graphite, the Loomis generation 3.
The Avid is offered more legnths than the GL3 and costs about $60 less. Both have more economical fittings than their more expensive counterparts.
Which rod is better ?
Well, for someone who is an expert caster the Loomis IMX.
For someone who is a good caster and for all around
purposes, I'd say the Loomis GLX in presentaion taper
(if you want to spend that much).
Of course, The St. Croix Avid is no slouch and is offered in more configurations than any other model listed here.
Nowadays, people tend to think that the faster a rod is the better - not so. Extreme tip flex rods are dogs to roll cast and
not exactly the best tool for the job when fishing in close.
So, in a nutshell, If you're fishing big river with big flys and you are an expert caster spend the money on the Loomix IMX or the Legend Elite. If you're fishing medium sized rivers and don't need to cast 60+ feet the St. Croix Avid is probably your best value, but if you want to spend the extra money on a Loomis Metolius in presentaion taper, go ahead.
