Is 20 lb braid enough or should I go heavier?
I have a heavy rod and reel.
Fin nor ahab 16 reel and a fin nor ahab 20 7' rod
and I use 20 or 30 lb shock leaders
should I go with thicker line?
I'm hoping to catch king mackerel and large Jacks
maybe even a cobia, tarpon or shark.
I just bought a Penn Sargus 5000 reel
with a Penn Tourque 6'6" rod w/ 30# braid.
So Now I'm a bit unsure about my heavier rod having lighter line.
Thanks!
I spent $30 plus on my 20# braid but I think I may need 30 or more
Yes, it's power pro
I may as well use it up for now
and get something else next time.
I wish you had asked us before you spent all that cash!
Did you spool 20LB STRENGTH Braid or 20LB diameter Braid?
Was it 6 LB diameter Braid?
In my opinion, 6LB diameter on any heavy action rod is not a good idea....
Why?
Although 6LB diameter Braid is fine for Inshore Saltwater fishing, Offshore you need closer to a 10-12LB diameter due to "abrasion resistance". Braid is STRONG, but if it's diameter is lower than 10-12LB the odds you will get cut-off are high.
(Your saying to yourself- Yeah, but I'm using a leader 20-30LB! The fish won't get near the main- line. Shark and Tarpon both tend to "roll" at boatside wrapping themselves in your main-line. If the diameter of your line is 6LB say goodbye to Mr. Shark/Mr. Tarpon......)
Braid is GREAT for Bottom-fishing of all sorts, but when it comes to Trolling Mono still reigns supreme, (in my opinion).
Good Kingfish Trolling line? Berkley Big Game 20LB or Ande Green 20lb.
I've seen guys pull BIG Grouper and Snapper with 12/50 Power Pro Braid. Power Pro is my braid of choice.....
The diameter of the 12/50 Braided line is 2-3 times more abrasion resistant than 6/20 Braid.
However, since you've already bought the line might as well use it.............if you start getting cut-offs go with the bigger diameter line.
Hope this helps ya Bee..?
