Use weights while fishing off dock?
I was wondering if anyone used weights while fishing off of a saltwater dock. I use everything from lures to live or dead greenbacks/shrimps. Do you use weights for some things and not others? Thanks
This really depends on what you're fishing for. If you're hitting up the snapper, you can add a split shot, if you have jacks or snook running about, free line ( no weight ) live or dead bait with live being the better choice for obvious reasons. If you have to deal with a heavy current such as incoming or outgoing tide, use the minimum weight needed to hold your bait down or in the area you want it to be
Whatever you fish for, make sure you have about 3-4 feet of a leader line. For instance, if you are using 12 pound test in main line ( spooled on the reel) then you should use about 25 pound test leader tied directly to the main line. This will help prevent cut-offs from nicks and barnacles and such. It's not a guarantee but you do improve your odds. Keep it all simple, don't get fancy with your terminal tackle ( beads, swivels and such) you will not have time for all that if you get cut-off.
I'll give you one tip that works every time; tie a leader to your main line. Tie a jig head ( weight according to current but usually a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce will do) The hook on that jig should be no bigger than a 1/0 -2/0. Hook your Shrimp through the head just before the brain ( dark spot) from bottom up. The hook point should be on top of the head. You can also do the same with a live greenback ( lower jaw through the nostrils) Make your cast and work the water columns slowly. I prefer to let it sink to the bottom and work it back, I get the most strikes this way. Remember to check your leader line often and replace when needed. There ya go, hope to have helped you out.~good luck catchin'.
