When fishing with hard body topwaters like poppers, dog walkers, and prop baits, can I add a little splitshot weight for casting distance without sinking the lure? will it effect the lures action? If I can do this where on the line should I add the weight?
If I can't do this, could I make the lure heavier by replacing the back treble hook with a heavier denser treble hook?
the problem seems to lie in your casting rather than the weight of the lure. you need to go with a lighter rod and line as well as a better reel. one that is designed to work well with smaller lures.
a shimano citica filled with 8lb NYLON MONO (fluorocarbon is not suitable for topwaters) and a medium or medium light rod (rated for 8 to 15 or 17lb line.
a citica is a good entry level casting reel for lighter lures. about 120 bucks. and a BPS bionic blade rod will work well with it. at times on sale for 50 bucks. clear maxima or "sufix" siege line. you may get by with 10lb.
you will immediately notice a BIG difference in casting range.
