The trick is to know your fish!
Different species and sizes have different spots in rivers, lakes, oceans, etc where they tend to dwell. Larger fish tend to want deeper water and higher flow. If you only fish in still spots or shallows, that is the trouble as the smaller fish tend to stay in those locations.
They best place to catch big ones when river fishing is right where a good current hits a slower spot, like an eddy. The medium/large fish will be waiting to catch what the current is bringing down, plus the water tends to be slightly deeper in the eddy as well.
BAsically look for any nice structure spot where currents change. Prime spot for a big one to hide.
