Questions about ocean fishing on the beach?
I am heading to the Outer Banks tomorrow and considering going fishing. The thing is I have have a 5 foot 6 inch zebco rod that I use for fishing at the pond/lake. Would this rod still work for surf fishing? I have seen pictures of other people doing surf fishing with rods much longer so I don't know. Although, I caught a smaller shark with a rod like the zebco I have now when I was younger at the beach. So do you think it would be OK to fish with that shorter rod? If so, what kinds of fish could I catch and how should I set up my line? Thanks
medium rod by the way
NO. you will need a surf rod and a spinning reel. Not only is the rod you have to short the spincast reels are not meant for heavy line, the line that is on most spincast reels will most likely break just by trying to cast the heavy sinker needed for surf fishing. you can get a surf rod and reel at walmart pretty cheap. Dont forget to get a sand spike rod holder unless you want to hold the rod the whole time. I would use no less than 15 pound test mono line or a 30 pound test braid, coast lock swivels, steel or titanium leader, 1/0 size hooks, or you can get pre made rigs that have the leader and hook. most walmarts carry everything you need, but if you go to a decent marine or sporting goods store tell them what you are planning on doing and your budget and you will be good to go.
