where do i begin to learn about fly fishing?
i have a fly reel and a fly rod but i just don't know where to begin in learning about the flies. What are some good resources to learn about when flies come out and what time of they day they are visible. I also would like something that had flies in new jersey. im from new jersey and im 16. Please help!!
About 24 years ago I took a couple classes a guy offered at the local high school. They were just one time classes during the evening. I think each one was $30 at the time. One focused on the basics of the sport including tackle and casting. The other was more about entomology and tying. You local community college may offer something similar.
I would also ask at any fly shops or general fishing supply stores.
Another invaluable place to learn is through magazines. Fly Tyer, Fly Rod & Reel, and American Fly Fisher are just a few resources. If cold water species are your main target then Salmon, Trout, and Steelheader is also good.
Also, look into fly tying books. Some not only have fly "recipes", but also offer fishing techniques and mention when and where those specific flies work the best. Anything by Skip Morris, Brian Chan, Bob Clouser, or Randall Kaufman fit this description. If you are looking mainly towards casting info Lefty Kreh is the man. Pioneer and legend are better descriptions of the man.
