Fly fishing with poppers......?
When I fly fish with poppers or you know the flys for bass I have a couple questions since I'm new to this fly fishing ....1 can I cast further with them 2 Wich one is best 3 does it matter what they look like what should they immatate 4 do they work better then lures 5 can I catch all types of predator fish with them 6 what flys do you use for pickeral 7 can you provide a link to a good website with them thanks sorry I asked so much
1. Can I cast further with Poppers?
Actually, due to wind resistance, they cast approx the same distance as a Muddler or other Floating/Sinking Fly.
2. Which one is best?
I've had luck using Saltwater versions such as these- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_59461_175002002_175000000_175002000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT
The saltwater versions are more durable and their hook stays consistently sharper.
3. Does it matter what they look like??? Depends on where your fishing, the local forage and the clarity of the water. However, realize- a fish views all Topwater lures mostly from the belly- not the sides or top. They also view them as "silhouettes" against a BRIGHT background- the sky! For these reason's, pay special attention to the "bottom" of any Popper you intend to purchase.
Also, against a BRIGHT sky what color would show up best as a silhouette? Black! They make 40 different colors of Topwater's to catch fishermen NOT fish! If you have Frog & Baitfish colored Fly's - those should be fine. The "action" of the lure is more vital than color.
4. Do they work better than lures? No, I've caught more fish on other fly's and other Lures. BUT, when the time is right it can be the ONLY thing that works.
5. Can I catch all predator fish with them? Yes. But you HOPE it's a Bass that strikes- Pike tend to cut Poppers, (and Topwaters) off.
6. What Fly's for Pickerel? You COULD use the same Fly- but you'd need a wire leader or heavy Mono/Fluro.
Links??- Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas.
Understand- MOST Bass Fly-fishing is done around weeds and structure. Here are some good fly's to think about purchasing-
