UK Stillwater Fly Fishing: What is the ideal AFTM rating for a fly rod, reel and fly line on a UK stillwater?
I was recently clearing out my parents loft and I come across an old 7ft fly rod and reel with an AFTM of just 3/4# which used to belong to my late father, but I'm guessing that this is a bit too light for a trout Stillwater, would you say?
Love the Cotswolds: I mainly visit stillwater trout fisheries in Greater Manchester and Cheshire here in the UK, however I have only just started going again after a break of many years, so my cast is a bit rusty and needs a little practice. My father taught me to fly cast when I was a young boy, however I am 46 now so my recollection of this is now just a distant memory, and it has become like being a novice starting all over again.
3/4# is somewhat light however, the fight on that weight is more exciting than using a heavier rod. Just be sure and match the line and leader for the weight and stick with small flies! You'll have a blast when you hook that 2lb trout!
Have fun...!
Where are you fishing?
I have fished the Test and the Coln but it's been a few years! I would love to come back and do some more soon! It's hot in Central Texas right now.
