How do I fix a broken graphite fly rod?
During a move, my graphite fly rod split near the top. The peaces fit together well enough to glue but I dont thing glue will hold if I have a big fish on... or even repeated casts. Is there some way to fix it, maybe glue and a brace or something?
Almost every major fly rod manufacturer now offers a no-questions asked repair/replace policy. Typically they'll charge you $20-40 shipping and handling fee. So, I'd contact the manufacturer first and see about fixing it. They won't repair it, more likely they'll supply you with a new rod section of similar taper.
Tip repair, especially with fly rods, is a mediocre fix. You lose the uninterrupted energy transfer that a fly rod needs, and you have a weak spot that's going to break again at some point down the line.
If you need to do a repair, cut both sections at the break so there are no fibers sticking out. A fine blade coping saw or hacksaw should do the trick. Check to see if the smaller section will fit into the larger section. If not, trim back the larger section in small increments until you can get a snug fit, with the upper section at least a 1/4" into the lower. Put some epoxy on the upper section, fit them together, align them, wipe the excess epoxy and let dry. Once dry, wrap the section with rod wrapping thread, and seal with a good thread coat.
Tight lines!
