How accurate are the Riedell sizing charts? (Figure Skates, Ladies) Please HELP!?
As I mentioned in another post, I'm a beginning ice skater who's doing it just for fun (recreationally), but would like to be able to jump/spin/etc. eventually. I am leaning towards buying Riedell's as my first choice skates, and because I'm a student and short on money, I'll probably order skates online to save cash. At the ice rink rentals, I fit comfortably into a size 6.5 (you know, those brown boots that they have). Should I also order a 6.5 for Riedell's? And is this sizing chart pretty accurate? (I like space so I'm probably going to order a little larger...) http://www.lowpriceskates.com/riedell-sizing-guide.aspx
P.S. I found a size 5.5 Riedell's that I absolutely LOVE, but am unsure about fitting into them. My feet measure 9 - 9 1/8 inches with a ruler, but I'm not sure that I trust my own measurements... please help!
Go to the pro shop and let them measure you, both length and width, using the Riedell measuring tool. That's the best way.
Failing that, have a friend trace your feet on paper then measure the tracing and use the size chart (which is accurate.) It's tricky to measure your own feet because it makes you bend over. You measure standing, by the way, not sitting.
If your feet are slightly different sizes, order the smaller size. You can have the larger skate stretched if it bothers you. IF there's a big difference, order the larger size. You can use an extra insole to take up the extra space in the too-big skate.
Don't buy skates too big or you'll be tripping and falling on your face. Figure skates that fit well don't hurt, so you don't need to leave "comfort room." After use, the padding will compress and the fit will loosen somewhat.
Most Riedells are heat-moldable, which provides a custom fit and will accomodate feet differences.
Ordering online doesn't always save money unless you want to do everything yourself - measuring, fitting, adjustments, heat-molding, etc. When you add on shipping, initial sharpening and adjustments, it costs the same as buying from the pro shop. Most pro shops include all those services for free. For online stores, check out the cost of return shipping/restocking charges if the skates don't fit right or have a defect. (No charge at pro shops)
Do the math and make sure you're really getting a bargain before you buy online. Check out prices (w/ shipping and sharpening), print out the pages, then go to the pro shop for measuring and price comparisons. At the least, you'll get an accurate measurement. They might match the price, too.
