Inch Lure Bait

Best Lure/Bait for fishing on lake?
I have started fishing on a 600 acre lake. I usually fish from a beach on the lake and try to cast out as far as I can with a texas rig with a 4 inch gold plastic shad worm. However, so far I have not caught anything. What kind of lure or bait will give me better success or what am I doing wrong
so what size hook should i use for this bait? (i know the lake has bass, perch, bluegills, and crappie)
should I just cast it out and let it sink to the bottom, or keep it suspended in the water?

If you use live bait like worms and minnows then you can suspend them under a bobber from 2 - 3 feet down or more depending on the water depth, the fish will rise to take the bait. If you want to use lures try an inline spinner like the roostertail, or curltailed grubs on a 1/8 oz. jig head and a floating minnow bait. These lures and baits will help you to get a good idea if there are any actively feeding fish in your area or if you should find another location. Look for some cover like weed beds, lily pads or downed trees; fish hang around this stuff for food and shelter. Good luck!
