Where is a good place to go fishing in Colorado?
My dad and I are planning to go on a fishing trip Sunday, and we are wondering where a good place to go fishing would be so we could catch some fish about 1-3 pounds off the shore? We live in Morrison, and we are willing to drive about 45 minutes. Also what bait or lures should we try? Thanks a lot for your help!
Soda lakes: is close to your location, off of HWY 8
Fish: yellow perch, large and small mouth bass, catfish, sunfish and sucker
Bear Creek: (Evergreen to Bear Creek Reservoir): If you like fly fishing, Bear Creek near Morrison, Colorado is a great place. Medium-sized stream, Bear Creek yields catches of 10- to 12-inch rainbow trout and sometimes larger trout have been caught. There are also a few tiger muskies and saugeye that locals have testified to seeing. Located, west of Morrison on Highway 74.
Blue River: With plenty of water from the Dillon Reservoir this river offers some of the best rainbow and brown trout fishing around. This is listed as a Fly and lure fishing river, only. This beautiful spot is located on Highway 9 at the Frisco-Silverthorne Exit off Interstate 70.
Dillion Res: Dillon Reservoir water levels fluctuate greatly. The one fish that has done very well in Dillon is the Arctic Char, but the last stocking was in 1998 and only a few old large fish remain. Kokanee are not abundant, the last stocking taking place in 1978. There is enough natural reproduction to maintain their population however, so occasional Kokanee catches are reported. Dillon for the time being is a very large put-and-take reservoir for rainbow trout. You may also find a few cutthroat trout making their way into the lake from feeder streams. The Arctic Char program may one day be re-introduced.
Near Ladeville, probably to far out of your way:Turquoise Reservoir supports an abundant lake trout population. Although they are small, with most under 20 inches, they offer the opportunity for anglers to catch an often hard-to-catch species. Most shore anglers fish from the south and east shorelines and find good action for mackinaw in June before fish move to deeper water. Using downriggers from a boat is the key to catching lake trout as the summer progresses. The bag limit for lake trout is two fish with no size restrictions. Catchable-sized (10+ inch) trout stocking resumed in 2007 and will continue in the future. Rainbow and Snake River cutthroat trout are being stocked from the Leadville National Fish Hatchery from June through early September. These fish should dramatically improve fishing at Turquoise Reservoir. Typical baits, flies, and lures for trout should be used.
An occasional large brown trout is landed at Turquoise. Abundant facilities (e.g. numerous campgrounds, two concrete boat ramps) and scenic vistas make this one of the most enjoyable places to fish in the State. Water level should be normal in 2009 and fishing is predicted to be good.
