What are good lures to use in Punta Cana Dominican Republic???
I already picked up the Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow 1/4 oz thats a little under 4 inches long in regular Silver color...
I also picked up a Rapala Blue Sardine Xrap 7/17 oz that is 4 inches long.
do you suggest using larger lures...or just plain live/dead bait the entire time???
these are some major species of fish in the Punta Cana Area
Popular fish species found in the Dominican Republic include Amberjack, Barracuda, Bonito, Cobia, Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), Espadons, Grouper, Jack, Kingfish, Porpoise, Redfish, Sailfish, Spearfish, Sea-Breams, Shark, Spanish Mackerel and Yellow Tail Snapper.
I appreciate any advice I don't know JACK about saltwater fishing but I will be fishing right off the beach the entire time. The area I am fishing is a mix of the Carribean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
THANKS!
This will give you a bit of an Idea about surf fishing

Well you won't really be able to catch too many off the offshore species, but heres what you can do to maximize your chances of catching something. Depending on how many rods you have I would do this.
When I go surf fishing off the beach I tend to bring at least 2 fishing rods if not 3. The reason being you can have live/dead bait in the water as well as work the area with a lure such as the Crystal Minnow. First thing if you don't already have one I would pick up a sand spike or two.

As for bait I would go with shrimp, crabs and/or the local baitfish. Live shrimp if you can get it is the universal saltwater bait. Almost anything will eat it. I would use a rig something like this http://www.stripersurf.com/highlowrig.html
You can see from the photo that there is a swivel at the top followed by a strong leader line (30 pounds or so) with two hooks and a pyramid sinker at the bottom. This is your general surf fishing rig.
Most tackle shops will direct you to surf fishing rigs. With one rod baited and in the water you can concentrate on working the shoreline with your lures.
Now if you have one rod you can certainly switch between these two methods. Or if you only want to use lures I can give you a few more.
I also like the bait buster from DOA lures

Plain ole spoons will get you barracuda along with other sorts.
You can use Bucktail Jigs tipped with bait

There are a million and one possibilities. You can also talk to local tackle shops and get a helping hand or two from them.
