How do I use topwater lures?
I am considering purchasing one or two topwater baits. I fish often, but have never used a topwater lure before. I want to get something cool or interesting like a cricket, mouse, or frog that will like hop across the water. The only thing is, I don't know how to use them? How do I? Would I use weights, like a couple split shots about two feet above it or what?
don't use any weights with a topwater. don't use any swivels either. a very small snap may be used but l prefer to tie all my lures direct. especially smaller ones. a great topwater to start with is a pop-r by rebel. get one with the silver sides and the color of the top won't make any difference because the fish can't see the top of the lure anyway.cast it out and let it sit until the ripples die away. then give it just a twitch or two. a bass may be just below it eyeballin' the thing waiting for it to move. the fish know it's there in any event. with just the smallest amount of slack in your line, while holding your rod down and to the side, give short sharp jerks and pauses with the rod tip. you can retrieve it slowly like this or you can do a steady twitching retrieve which will make the lure come in, in a side to side Z pattern. this is called "walking the dog". when the fish hits, wait until you feel it on the line before setting the hook. for plastic frogs, get one of them already rigged with a hook in it. not a hard rubber thing with molded legs. get a softer hollow one by spro, stanley or harrison-hoge. make sure it is a floater. cast it out and retrieve it pretty much the same way, stopping on top of grass beds and lily pads, slowly pulling it back into the water. there are some other soft plastic worm material types you need to rig with your own hook like the ragetail frog or shad both of which are excellent plastic buzz baits. when rigged according to package directions, cast these out and begin retrieving immediately fast enough to get the legs/tail kicking up a fuss. l've pulled bass within inches of the shoreline with these by casting along the bank by rocks and stumps. l hope you and whoever else reads this gets some usable information here. l have been fishing for years and feel l have a fair amount of knowledge to share...withorwithoutabestanswer.
