Muskie Fishing???????????????
Muskie fishing in MN? I have been looking at lakes like Mille lacs and Leech. Since they are a bit closer than lakes like Minnetonka and Eagle. What methods to try? certain lures/baits? i wanna try large live sucker minnows like those you would use in pike spearing. so like 10-15" suckers. obviously topwaters. i want to stay away from trolling. so would early season be best for casting? im sure you can all season. just any information. im an avid pike fisherman but want to tackle the muskie.
Mille Lacs and Leech are both good lakes for big fish. They are covered in ice right now, so you won't see action this time of year. The musky season opens in June I believe. Early season fish are hungry because of their lethargic winter feeding habits. When summer hits, get ready to cast on big lakes like those. You have to find the fish. Bucktails, cowgirls, inline spinners for weedy patches, and then topwaters become more effective in the warmer days of summer. You may want to stay away from trolling, but it is a very effective way to find the fish. Trolling along shoreline structure and casting along the way produces good results. Sucker minnows are a good bet if you know there are fish in the area. Smaller lakes are good bets with live bait. If you are going to use suckers, use a quick strick rig. It has a treble stinger that allows you to set the hook immediately after a fish grabs your bait. This prevents fatalities from fish swallowing hook, and it will prevent you from losing weary fish that choose to spit out your bait. I however prefer artificials most of the time. They are much more efficient and trigger aggressive strikes from big fish. Saw two 50" plus fish swimming along shore last spring while putting the dock in on Mille Lacs. Good luck!
