Will those cheap freshwater rods break catching steelhead?
Like these from wal-mart and big 5: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Okuma-Fin-Chaser-Combo-Pink/13228682
Those 20 buck okuma ones... what kind of line do you use on them? are they good enough for catching steelhead?
About three years ago, my son (40) and I walked into Wal-Mart in Juneau, Alaska and I saw a selection of rods in about four different lengths and two different styles for spinning and casting reels. They were marked $9.88 and included a GREAT Pixie salmon spoon along with the rod. I knew the spoons were somewhere around $4.00 each by themselves, so I figured it was a fluke and somebody screwed up on the pricing. I took advantage of their obvious error and bought one. I was blown away by the quality of the rod right from the get go. We used it for fishing for three kinds of Pacific salmon (Kings, Silvers, and Chum) and was TRULY impressed by how well it fished and how well it handled EVERYTHING those fish tried to give it. I was SO impressed that I loaned it to my son who was likewise impressed and went in and bought one of his own. Since then, we have used the rods on two more kinds of salmon, as well as northern pike, rock fish, and more. The rods have NEVER let us down. We now own a total of five of them between us and have been responsible for at least another dozen or so being purchased by friends and family as well as total strangers we have seen looking at rods in the store. Two years ago, at the biggest sport show in Alaska, we saw people carrying them out of the arena to their cars and trucks 3 and 4 at a time. A dealer was selling them at a "SHOW SPECIAL" price of $14.00. Ironically, you can STILL to this day buy those same rods at Wal-Mart for $9.88 WITH the lure still included. But a LOT of people just don't go into Wal-Mart on the assumption that everything they sell is second-rate in quality. But I am HERE to tell you that you need to look closely at the quality of the "STORM" rods on the rack. They are EASY to find. They have the yellow HI-VIZ tips for easy seeing in low light conditions and they are the ONLY ones that include a NEW Pixie salmon spoon right on the rod. And while you are checking the quality, count the number of guides and also notice the bait holder loop near the handle. Then count the guides and look for the bait holders on some of the more expensive rods to see just what a GREAT deal you are getting from STORM, and from Wal-Mart. You're gonna love it! I do. And so does everyone I know that fishes with these great and VERY inexpensive rods. And I've got the photos to prove how well those hot pink Pixies work as well. Go for it. You WILL be impressed. It must be obvious that I am, or I wouldn't have taken the time to explain all of this to you. Right? (No, I don't work for Wal-Mart! LOL)
