What would yWhat fly rod is good for small trout?ou like to ask?
I love to fish for trout and go hiking in the mountains for them (streams, pools, small lakes). i only used spinners. i have gone with my dad and his friend (a fishing guide) fly fishing in alaska a couple times. I am stuck over getting the Frequent Flyer 864-7 Fly Rod or Clearwater II 864-4 Fly Rod from orvis. Any other good small trout rods for under $300 with a 3 or 4 wt for me?
Do you need a pack rod? 4 & 5 piece rods are plenty handy. A 7-pc rod becomes a bunch of ferrules.
Have you settled on 4-wt for a reason? I like 3 & 4-wt rods when there is no wind, but it can get plenty breezy in the canyons. Then I prefer a 5-wt on even smallish streams.
I don't follow Orvis' rod lineup much anymore. If I had to go on a whim, I'd probably go with the 4-pc Clearwater over the Frequent Flyer. Orvis has been offering the Clearwater for many years as a good, entry level rod, whereas the Frequent Flyer is more of a "I need a rod that I can stuff in my cargo bag."
