yes, this is an excellent book-
this is another good one:
http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Hatches-Introductory-Guide-Effective/dp/0811731820/ref=pd_sim_b_title_5/102-5551264-3418505
these and many other books are good, but they won't do you much good on the stream- there are laminated hatch cards that you CAN take to the stream with you- and would be more immediately helpful. check out the doc sneeds cards here:

Identifying the insects onstream is neat, but isn't essential that you actually know that the bug you see is a epheremella infrequens-
learn to tell which are mayflies, caddis, and stoneflys, note the size and color and imitate them. the mayflies tend to fly with a loopy up and down motion, with their split tails hanging down- they are the ones to imitate as a dry fly with a comparadun, parachute dun, or standard winged dry fly-
Imitate the nymphs with a pheasant tail nymph or hares ear nymph.
Caddis fles and stoneflies look like grasshoppers flying. the caddis often hop or skitter across the surface. Use a elk hair caddis on the surface, a zug bug, or sparkle pupae under the surface.
Stoneflies, use a large stimulator or foam adult pattern, a big stonefly numph under the surface.
Check out Westfly- an excellent website to learn about entomology and how to tell which fly to use. http://www.westfly.com/
Good luck!
