Body armor questionabout shotgun slugs?
Will a standard police bullet resistant vest with a hard plate over the vitals stop a
12 gauge 2 3/4 length Remington 1 1/4 ounce Buck hammer lead slug at a velocity of 1550 fps
Argument with my friend he thinks it will I dont because I think it will deform because it is pure lead
what about a shaped copper coated slug like for long range used at close range?
Also would it break ribs or anything if it did not hit the hard plate?

For the most common vests Level IIIa, with the most common ceramic shock plates, you will not get penetrations with any round you mentioned, even jacketed slugs or sabots. Same with most metal shock plates.
You will get trauma. Not just broken ribs. If no plate you will definitely get internal injuries. With plates internal still likely with a slug. There is a lot of energy to stop with a slug.
What the vest and plate do is prevent penetration and wound cavity so you do not get immediate long term disabling of the person. They are still hurt dangerously so, but can still fight back fairly quickly. The blow is not usually immediately life threatening (there is time to get medical attention).
Vests can fail with multiple hits if the hits severely deform the vest, make folds.
