How to catch a big pike?
What kind of lure should i use?
Where to fish in a lake?
I live in Saskatchewan, where we grow some monster pike.
Generally, the bigger the spoon (lure) the bigger the fish. I'm poor as $#@% so I do mostly shore fishing, but when I get in my canoe I pretty much use the same technique. I just got back from the churchhill river and used pretty much the same technique and caught 5-8 lbs pike pretty consistently. Plus, I can really cast a heavy spoon.
Get yourself some steel leaders and 10 lbs test. Get a weedless 5 of diamonds and cast that ON TOP of the weedbed, retrieve like a dirty S.O.B. so it doesn't get caught in the weeds, but once you're clear the weeds, let the spoon sink a few feet, and start your retrieve slowly. Make sure to vary the speed of retrieve, sometimes different presentations will work better then others.
You should be fishing near the weedbed when it's warm out, and generally pike don't like to be facing the sun, but their not picky about what they murderize. If you can find some weedy spots that quickly turn into a sandy or rocky bottom try to fish around that area. The pike usually grab the hook and turn away, so the hook set is pretty easy.
Trolling a deep shad will get you lots of hookups but I'm not sure if you have a boat. Just keep to shallow weedy parts and you'll get a few lunkers.
Good luck.
