Bass fishing help?
How can I catch a bass? What is the best time to catch a big bass? What bait? couple days ago I caught about a 13inch bass, but I want bigger. Are there pike and muskie in south eastern michigan lakes?
Im from south-western michigan and fish here also. Grand rapids, actually. I quite often fish on both sides of lower mich. Right now, most of the inland lakes' temperature are around 80 degrees so dont fish to shallow. I would cast out where it is 8 feet or deeper. Definitly look for ledges and drop offs. Almost all the lakes around us hold bass and northern pike. There are a few that have muskie, although i've never landed one. There is one lake off plainfield ave that i have seen a muskie swim up towards the boat. Here is what you should use for bass:
YUM BUZZFROG. It is an amazing lure. I have tried two colors of these so far and they work wonders. (carolina pumpkin/yellow and watermelon red flake.) I bought mine at meijer so you can get them almost anywhere that sells Yum products. Also buy some Gamagatsu size 4 offset hooks. Make sure the point of the hook is on TOP of the frog not underneath. You can use these any time during the day but at sun up and sun down are the best times due to the low light conditions or when there are lily pads or moss.
Senkos/yum dinger
Texas rig these weightless with a size 3/0 offset EWG (extra wide gap) hook and throw them in 6+ feet of water. Just throw them out, let it sink. Every now and then lift the rod tip and/or give a sudden jerk to trigger the bite.
floating minnow
we have alot of lakes around here that hold perch, so i would get a perch colored. Since the bass are deeper right now, use this at night.
Crankbaits
throw a deep diving crankbait out. This will get the lure down to the bass' level.
For pike:
You would basically find pike anywhere you would find a bass. Pike are easy to catch when you figure out how and very fun to fish for. My opinion is that bass is better though. pike are even less pickier than bass. the lure Size doesnt really matter but i go by the phrase 'bigger is better'.
Try a large jointed floating rapala, one that is 6-9 inches and is a deep runner.. For some reason, pike are generally attracted more to the jointed rapalas than the not jointed ones. I know this from expierience.
Other things you can try are:
-1. trolling with a spinnerbait
--2. put a hook through a small bluegill, perch, crappie, or shad on a big bobber and through it along a weedline.
---3. Try spoons ex. red devils. This is probably the mst popular way to catch pike.
----4. Senkos or yum dingers. I have caught many northerns on these while going for bass.
-----5. When there are lily pads around or moss on top of water, throw a frog. I perfer a yum buzzfrog. It is an amazing lure for pike also.
good luck!
