Is this a good lure for striped bass and bluefish?
http://www.allbaits.ru/UserFiles/Image/rapala/x-rap_jointed_s.png The X-Rap Rapala jointed shad, silver color. I plan on using it in Long Island Sound? Is this a good lure for stripers and blues? If so, how to use it? I havn't tried it yet.
It's made of hard plastic, and does match the American shad and blueback herring around here, though it's quite large, about 5.5in
Hello, Corydoras, welcome to the fishing section.
It would probably work well as long as you have it in a color that matches certain species of baitfish in the Long Island Sound area. But as far as holding up, it may or may not too well. When striped bass strike, they strike hard. Not quite like a peacock bass, but close to. Bluefish on the hand actually have teeth. And since this is a Rapala lure, it is most likely made from very soft balsa wood and will probably not hold up long enough if a decent sized blue were to hit it. By all means try it, though.
Best techniques to use this type of bait are quick jerks of the rod tip similar to working a jerkbait, and regular stop-and-go retrieves. By stop-and-go, I mean make a long cast with it, reel it in with several cranks of the reel handle, pause for a second or two, and reel again. Do that all the way back to the boat, pier, jetty, etc.
Edit:
Larger baits tend to weed out the smaller fish and nail the bigger ones. Here in Souhern California, I use baits 8, 9, 10 even 12 inches or bigger when my local lakes get stockings of rainbow trout and largemouth bass start feeding on them. Use it, and hope for a big one.
