Rattling Popper Fishing

Need help hooking gar fish.?
Here's the situation. I live by a lake with at least a hundred gar in the little cove we live in. I Usually use a popper (top water) or other top water lures or rattle traps. The gar will follow the lure at least 20 feet. (I can see them at the top) But they will just never strike! It is very annoying because i have never caught one. Any tips or different types of lure of how to get them to strike?
Gar are fairly easy to catch with the right technique. They are predatory fish and can't pass up a 3 to 4 inch blue gill, bream or shiner. They seem to hit just as well on dead fish as live ones so don't worry too much about fresh bait. The key is in the rig and how you play the fish. Rig your bait on a medium size bass type hook about 3 feet below a good size bobber and cast it out where you have seen gar in the past. The next step is the most important---open the bail, press the button, do whatever it is to your reel to allow the fish to take as much line as he wants. Gar will take the bait in their moth but they do NOT swallow it immediately. Let the fish run. When it stops running, don't do anything! This is the time when they are waiting for the bait to die and getting it ready to eat. When the gar starts to run again, then set the hook and get ready for a fight!
They can also be caught on a 12" long piece of VERY frayed white nylon rope. Just cast it in front of the fish and reel it fast. When the gar strikes, its teeth tangle and you've got him.
Gar is a very tasty fish if you're willing to use your tin snips to get through their scales.
