I have always said, you don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy fly fishing, but it sure don't hurt. However, there are some decent outfits that can be purchased in the price range you mention. I have fished TFO rods, and find them to be highly competitive with their more expensive counterparts. The problem is this: to catch the variety of fish you have mentioned, one rod is simply not going to do the job. For pan fish, I would recommend a 3 or 4 weight rod, for steelhead and salmon a 5, 6, or even 7 weight. But for pike and bass, which can get large, you will need an 8 or 9 weight outfit, just to handle the larger flies you will need to present. You could probably get by with a 6 weight for all, but you are going to miss out on a lot of pan fish because of the lack of delicate presentation, and you will over tax the larger species by catching them on equipment that is too light. However, I would suggest, if you can purchase only one outfit, that you go to www.cabelas.com and look at the following combo: Temple Fork Outfitters Lefty Kreh Series One Fly Rods/Cabela's Three Forks™ Fly Combo. This is a pretty good outfit for the money.
