Where is best for crappie, deep water or near shore? ?
I will be on a pond with black crappie tomorrow. I have never fished for crappie and I am unfamiliar with this pond. Its a 2,500 acre pond with a max depth of 41 feet. Should I fish deep, shallow , near inlets or islands? How about trolling with lead core line? I have several dozen shiners for bait and can get worms or artificial lures. I am in Maine so the water temperature is starting to drop. We are expecting temperatures in the 20s tonight. Any tips will be appreciated.
Flounder is on the right trac. Thumbs!
Generally, Crappie are considered twilight/night feeders.
They love to feed early morning, sundown, and at night.
Shiners are too big for Crappie. You would want to use Fathead minnows or Crappie minnows.
Your "best bet" (in the day) would be to troll a mixture of Crappie minnows, Beetle Spins, & very small (1/16 OZ) tube jigs using light-weight line (I like Berkley Fireline 4/10 Smoke with an 18" flurocarbon 6LB leader.).
The lighter line doesn't spook fish and allows your bait/lures a natural action.
Use a "slip-float" rig for your Crappie/Fathead Minnows.
(During the day), Troll points leading to deeper water, edges & dropoffs leading to 18-25Ft.
Keep an eye on your electronics! Crappie tend to suspend in deep water during daylight hours. If you find a school, stop trolling and start casting.
Other good baits?- Meal worms, Earthworms.
Don't use lead-core line, it's overkill. You need a Medium/lite action rod & reel with a sensitive tip.
Crappie will be most active right before dark. And tend to get shallow during any low light times, (cloudy, rainy days).
