How much mono to use for topshot?
What is a good ratio for putting a mono topshot on any given fishing line. I've read you put top shots on either dacron or spectra backing. What I'm confused about is what is a good rule for how much top shot to use in length to how much backing and how much stronger should the topshot should be compared to the backing?
P.S
I want to go big game fishing so that's why I'm asking
My reel is able to handle 975 yds of braid and 500 yds mono.
The reason for using a topshot is so you can pack more line on the reel (with the much thinner braid), but keep some stretch in the system. First of all, use the thin braid, not the thick old dacron. Braid is much thinner for a given strength so you'll fit more on the reel; dacron is basically just as thick as mono so you won't be gaining much other than the lack of stretch, which with a big fish on the line isn't what you want. You'd be better off just filling the reel with straight mono than using dacron.
The main reason for using a topshot (rather than just a short leader) is to act as as a shock absorber so when a big fish shakes its head there's some give in the system. Though heavy mono stretches, you need a considerable amount so it can stretch enough to make a difference, so you'll go with a longer topshot, maybe up to over 100 yards.
If you're trolling or kite fishing, this is a good length for a topshot; however if you're fishing live bait, swimming out behind the boat, you might want a shorter topshot (50 feet or so) so the mackerel doesn't have to drag as much heavy mono around when it's swimming away from the boat.
Anyway, the topshot should generally be the same strength as the main line.
