How do you use a bait casting reel?
I have used spinning reels my whole life. I'm starting to see more and more people using bait casting reels. How do you use them. Do you have to keep pressing your thumb on the line to hold the line up? How do you cast them? Ive never used one and i want to try, I would just have no clue how to use one at all. If you could provide a video or link showing how to it would be great thanks.
Hey Steve, The first thing that you want to do is get a bait caster in your hands and head out to the back yard. Tie on a bait of some sort like a spinner bait or crank bait. I used to tape the bait up with electrical tape as to not get it beat up and keep the hooks out of the dirt and grass. You will need to find the happy spot of the reel by letting a foot of line out and pressing the button on the reel. The line should come off the spool slowly and not drop in a free spool fasion. Once you are happy with the drop rate then you can practice casting. Start off side arm casting short distances keeping your thumb on the spool to control the line coming off the reel. If you lose contact with the spool you will back lash. It is a trial and error technique that requires practice... period! Once you are comfortable enough to try casting overhand... a little trick that you can do is to make the cast and then turn the reel upright (handle facing up) this puts weight on the bearings helping the reel to not free spool on you. When you are comfortable with this then you can lay out a target to cast to. Practice Steve Practice, you will get it, it just takes time and effort. Good luck and remember that we all started out and had to figure it out. Good luck!
