Apart from a few very cheap rods which use unsplit whole cane sections, all quality cane ( or bamboo) rods are constructed using sections of split and glued cane.
Whether it is called split cane or bamboo or palacona, it shares the same construction method.
Basically, the selected cane sections are prepared and split into lengths. The split sections are then carefully planed in special jigs until they are the correct profile and taper. The sections are then glued together, bound very tightly and allowed to dry. After further cleaning and preparation, they become the hexagonal tapered sections that you see on Cane( or split cane, or bamboo, or split bamboo.....!) fishing rods.
fitted out with handles, reel fittings, guides etc and given a varnish, they are ready for action.
The difference in the terminology is just that, although there are different grades of cane but that is a different story.
