What is the best bait for catching striped bass in Long Island sound aound this time?
I have been recently fishing the hudson for stripers and the best bait for them had been bloodworms. However, I am starting to fish off piers in the long island sound and i have heard that bloodworms arent the best bait for them there. People say bunker is most effective but i have never fished with it before. Alson sandworms i heard are good and also lures. Any ideas for the best bait or lures?
I would also say the bunker would be your best bet, peanut bunker most likely if you can get them, a cast net would be your best bet for that. Try to find out what bait fish are running through the sound at whatever time you will be there and this will be your best bet as these bass are already used to chasing whatever bait is naturally in there territory. It may also be porgies, (menhaden), or mackerel, and your best bet here will be to talk to some locals who are out there fishing.
One thing I should mention here though, at the risk of pissing off the local Long Island bait shops, is don't trust everything they tell you as I feel that they're more concerned with peddling whatever bait they may have to much of, as opposed to really wanting you to catch some fish, ESPECIALLY if your a tourist. Good luck out there
