Pier and surf rod reel combo?
Does anyone know a good combo for pier and surf fishing. I live in south Florida and plan to fish for Spanish macks, pompano, snook, occasionally snapper and bluefish. are there any good rod reel combos someone knows . I can't spend more than $80 on it though. Also I plan to use light lures rather than lives so a flexible but light rod is probably better
I'm about to save you some money for bait!
It's gonna take some hunting but worth the effort. The type of fishing you want to do is is perfect for a med/med hvy action rod. For pier and surf, the longer the rod the better but depending on your casting skills, you can get away with a 9-10 footer easy.
For an example of what I'm talking about, I bought a 12 foot Shakespeare Tide water rod for 20 bucks ( on sale @ wally world) and bought the matching reel ( shakespeare Platinum) for 32 bucks. 52 bucks of work horse fishing system and the only complaint I have is of the stupid rod tip that came with the rod. I changed that quick and bought a new tip ( 3 bucks) and replaced it myself. I added line... 255 yds. of 17# test line ( Ande on sale @ 5 bucks ) and now I have a system perfect for just about the same fishing you do and more.
I'm not trying to brag, believe me, I'm trying to make a point. A lot of people over look the work horse systems available to them and go right for the name brand and pay out the nose (putting it kindly.) If you shop around and control that impulse shopping, you come across great deals in the most unlikely places. Sports authority, for example. Did you know that the one in Homestead has several 9-10 footers in the 20-30 dollar range? All med/hvy and a few with the Penn Brand. Wally World is seasonal and change out their fishing section accordingly and place alot of the items on sale from .10 cents- 5 bucks on higher end stuff worth 2-3 times more ( best time to stock up is 3 months before and up to Spring around here) . I actually bought a shopping cart filled to the top with sales items and only paid 50 bucks! That was years back but it's true.
I know I'm ranting here a bit but I'm trying to help you out. If you're looking for a work horse system good for pier and surf, go with a shakespeare tide water in the 12 ft. ( med action..35 bucks reg. price) and the shakespeare Platinum ( heavy reel..32 bucks) and you'll have a great system for your style of fishing. You could go for the more expensive stuff but why? I've dogged out this system and it hasn't failed me yet and besides that, if it ever goes into the ocean I won't cry as hard as I would for a more expensive system. That's just me, I look for deals and prefer the under dogs . I wouldn't have it any other way. ~good luck catchin'.
