Tackle Hook Lure

Going pier fishing NC later this month?
I haven't done any in years. Have only done fresh water. I'm taking a young (9 rd old) friend and he has never been fishing in his life. Don't really have the hooks and stuff but still have the rods. Have re-lined them with 15lb. Questions: What size hooks are best? I will be fishing the Kare Pier on Carolina Beach. According to their sight, they have been catching spanish and kings plus all the other stuff. Grew up fishing on Big Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach back in the 70's so I know that fishing a pier is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you will catch.
We will be using spinning tackle. Any suggestions on rigs? Hooks, weights, etc. While I will probably rig a float for him, and maybe a bottom rig, I will also play with some lures. Any and all ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I have not fished in NC in a long time however I do know that Spanish Maks will be running I belive also that you might run across blues. If you are using artifical lures I would sugest Gotcha plugs or Rapoala Magnums (salt water) of the same size as the gotchas. If you want the "Choco Box" effect I would sugest getting some premade rigs from any bait shop, pier store, or super mart that sells fishing supplies. Make sure that you get the ones that have two snap swivels for hooks and one on the bottom for a weight. As far as hooks go I would sugest getting two different sizes so your types of fish will vary. I would not go any smaller than a 10 or any larger than a 2/0 for smaller fish (I would make sure to have about five different sizes between the extreems at equal intervals). If larger fish are present you might be able to go up to 5/0 but I do not know how big of a big fish you could catch on your current gear. I hope this helps and make sure you know your limits and minimum size (most of the people at the pier will be able to help you but it would not hurt to do a little research first).
