Muskie Fishing Difficulty?
I want to know chances of catching muskie? I will be fishing Leech lake MN and or Lake Mille Lacs MN. I want to mainly just cast in edges of bays, not a fan of trolling. So i would be throwing out top-waters and other casting lures. But how difficult is it to land these fish? Because casting for 12 hours and not even having a fish follow it to the boat would be very disappointing. I do have patients though. And have went that long without catching a fish. So even if im told its likely to happen. i will still go. So any other lakes around there that you recommend or just any tips AT ALL. would be greatly appreciated!
If I had to rate the difficulty of this fish on a scale from one to ten I would give muskie fishing an 8. I think its true that alot of species can be difficult when conditions are tough and muskies can be especially quirky and unpredictable. I would'nt expect to have instant success especially fishing for the highly pressured muskies on Leech and Mille Lacs but having said that, I would still highly recommend doing it as often as you can. One tip I would give you is dont even focus on how much time you are spending on the water because that can only put you in a negative frame of mind. Learning how to fish for muskies can take a lifetime so take you time and try something new every time you go out on the lake. Just to give you an example of how much time in took me to close the deal, I fished for somewhere close to 40 hours before I landed my first legal musky (which was 43inches/23 lbs.) I had 3 follows from legal fish before I had that first one bite and I missed a nice fish as well. It can be frustrating but in the end it is worth it. Be prepared to put some time in before you find success and don't give up. Focus on the basics and start simple. I got alot of great info from the book The Complete Guide To Musky Hunting by Jim Saric/Steve Heiting. The very best way to learn about musky fishing is from a guide or a freind that is familiar with the sport. Musky fishing is very specific and challenging and it helps to have some guidance along the way. You are also welcome to email me directly with any questions that you may have about musky fishing.
