What should be included in a frog tank?
at the moment i have a plastic storage box its about 30cm across and 15cm deep. it has a large wooden fish tank thing in it which goes up from the base to just beneath the lid of the box. its like a branch thing. there's a little glass dish underneath it filled with good clean water and some soil around the base of the wood. i only have one frog at the moment the others are still tadpoles. he's about the size of my fingernail and still has a tail. i got them from my boyfriends pond and they'll go back there in a few weeks. any suggestions on feeding because the box only has a fully removable lid so flies could be difficult and i'm not sure my mum wants crickets in the house.
i can't put him back my boyfriend and his family is on holiday so it will be at least three weeks before that is an option.
Tayah; Once tadpoles successfully emerge, unless ye have a well prepared and extremely long maintained environment waiting in another tank? It's really best to return them straight to the side of the pond they were spawned in.
See, those froglets will need pin headed invertebrate food. And plenty of it. There's no way you can collect that sort of stuff. That's why one needs to create a complete little environment, in a largish tank, and leave it outside. Normal insects will treat it as part of the surrounding environment and utilise it. Thus, in a couple of months or so, the micro environment ye created in the tank will contain a naturally occurring populace of tiny, creeping things. Froglet food on the hoof.
The only other way is to culture Drosophila (Fruit Flies). Ye mum wouldn't be best pleased with that either. Believe me.
Let them go. Maybe recapture one when they're an inch or so long. Then they can handle small crickets. Then ye can come back here asking what to do about the crickets that have escaped into ye home and even turned up in ye next door neighbours living room.
Bottom line? I'd strongly suggest ye reconsider the whole idea.
